What is BIMI?
Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) is an emerging email specification that enables organizations to display their brand logo alongside authenticated emails in recipients' inboxes. It provides a visual indicator of trust, helping recipients quickly identify legitimate emails from brands they recognize.
BIMI works by leveraging existing email authentication protocols. Your domain must have properly configured SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records with a DMARC policy of "quarantine" or "reject" before BIMI can function. Once authentication is in place, you publish a BIMI DNS record pointing to your logo and optional Verified Mark Certificate (VMC).
Major email providers including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Apple Mail, and Fastmail support BIMI, though requirements vary. Gmail requires a VMC issued by a trusted certificate authority, while other providers may display logos without one. BIMI adoption is growing as brands seek to improve email engagement and combat phishing.
