SpamRATS (www.spamrats.com) maintains three lists: RATS-Dyna (dynamic/generic rDNS IPs), RATS-NoPtr (IPs with no reverse DNS), and RATS-Spam (confirmed spam sources). It is used by some mail servers as part of their filtering stack.

  • 1RATS-Dyna: Your IP has a generic/dynamic reverse DNS entry (e.g., pool-1-2-3-4.isp.com)
  • 2RATS-NoPtr: Your IP has no reverse DNS (PTR) record configured
  • 3RATS-Spam: Your IP was confirmed sending spam to SpamRATS traps

Check your listing

Visit www.spamrats.com/lookup.php and enter your IP to see which list(s) you appear on and the specific reason for your listing.

Fix your reverse DNS

For RATS-Dyna or RATS-NoPtr: Configure proper reverse DNS (PTR record) for your mail server IP. The rDNS should match your mail server hostname and should not look like a dynamic/residential IP. Contact your ISP or hosting provider to set this up.

For RATS-Spam: Stop the spam

If listed on RATS-Spam, identify and stop the spam source on your server. Secure compromised accounts, patch vulnerabilities, and review all outbound email.

Request removal

SpamRATS provides a self-service removal tool on their website. After fixing the underlying issue, visit their lookup page and follow the removal link.

Important Tips

  • ●Proper reverse DNS is a fundamental requirement for email servers. Every IP that sends email should have a valid PTR record.
