Configure your mail server to reject at SMTP time
The root cause of backscatter is accepting email and then bouncing it later. Configure your mail server to reject invalid recipients during the SMTP transaction (at RCPT TO stage) rather than accepting the message and generating a bounce afterward. This is the single most important fix.
Disable catch-all addresses
If your server accepts email for any address at your domain (catch-all), disable this. Only accept email for valid, existing mailboxes. This prevents your server from accepting and then bouncing spam to non-existent addresses.
Wait for auto-expiry or consider express removal
