Email Deliverability for E-commerce: Transactional and Marketing Email Guide
E-commerce email needs both high deliverability for order confirmations and strong inbox placement for promotions. Here's how to optimize both.
Why e-commerce email deliverability is different
E-commerce businesses send two fundamentally different types of email that require different strategies:
Transactional email (order confirmations, shipping notifications, receipts) must reach the inbox without fail — these are messages customers expect and want. Missing a shipping notification generates support tickets and refund requests.
Marketing email (promotions, newsletters, cart abandonment) competes in crowded inboxes and triggers spam filters more often. These messages need optimization for deliverability AND engagement.
Mixing these on the same IP or sending domain is a mistake many e-commerce businesses make.
Separate transactional and marketing streams
Use different sending domains: - Transactional: notifications.yourstore.com or mail.yourstore.com - Marketing: promo.yourstore.com or news.yourstore.com
With separate domains, a marketing deliverability problem (triggered by a sale promotion that got high spam complaints) won't affect whether your order confirmations reach customers.
Use different IPs or different ESP sub-accounts for each stream. Most major ESPs (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Postmark, SendGrid) support this.
Transactional email
- →Order confirmations, receipts, shipping notifications
- →Password resets and account security emails
- →Must reach inbox immediately — 2FA codes expire quickly
- →Triggered by user action — always expected and wanted
- →Very low complaint rates (users want these)
- →Use dedicated sending domain + dedicated IP
- →Recommended ESPs: Postmark, SendGrid (transactional subuser), AWS SES
Marketing email
- →Promotions, flash sales, newsletters, cart abandonment
- →Product recommendations, re-engagement, loyalty
- →Inbox placement preferred but spam tab is acceptable
- →Bulk sends to opted-in subscribers
- →Higher complaint risk — especially flash sales
- →Use separate subdomain to protect transactional reputation
- →Recommended ESPs: Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Drip, Omnisend
Best ESPs for e-commerce by use case
| ESP ↕ | Best For ↕ | Starting Price ↕ | Key Strength ↕ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postmark | Transactional (order confirmations, receipts) | Free to 100/mo, then $15/mo | Highest deliverability for transactional; strict transactional-only policy |
| Klaviyo | E-commerce marketing + automation | Free to 500 contacts, then $20/mo | Deep Shopify/WooCommerce integration; best-in-class segmentation |
| SendGrid | Both transactional and marketing | Free tier, then $19.95/mo | Scalable; use separate subusers to isolate stream reputation |
| AWS SES | High-volume transactional at low cost | From $0.10/1,000 emails | Cheapest at scale; requires more setup for optimal deliverability |
| Omnisend | Omnichannel e-commerce marketing | Free to 500/mo, then $16/mo | SMS + email in one platform; good for e-commerce workflows |
Transactional email best practices
Send immediately — Order confirmations and shipping notifications should send within seconds of the triggering event. Delays increase support contacts and hurt trust.
Keep it simple — Transactional emails don't need heavy promotional design. Clean, clear, text-heavy emails deliver better and render on all devices.
Include all the information customers need — Order number, item list, shipping address, tracking number (when available). Reduces 'where is my order?' contacts.
Don't mix transactional and promotional — A 'your order shipped' email that also promotes a sale gets marked as spam more often than a pure notification.
Marketing email best practices for e-commerce
Segment by purchase history and browsing behavior — Relevant emails get opened; irrelevant ones get spam-reported.
Honor preference centers — Let customers choose frequency and category (sale alerts vs. newsletters vs. product updates).
Send at the right frequency — Over-sending e-commerce email is the top complaint driver. Test frequency with different segments.
Monitor deliverability by campaign type — Flash sales often have worse deliverability than regular newsletters due to spam-trigger words. Test subject lines before sending.
Remove cart abandonment contacts who haven't opened in 90 days — They won't convert and they hurt your reputation.
